The Future Generations Forum & The Wales Protocol for Future Generations

The Wales Protocol for Future Generations is a groundbreaking, vital step forward; the laying of a foundation brick in “building the bridges towards thriving futures for humanity and the wider web of life on Earth.”

“The Wales Protocol for Future Generations is an implementation framework designed to guide communities and world leaders towards a more sustainable and equitable future. This Protocol has been developed by The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales with the support of a high-level coalition of global early adopters. The substance of the protocol was informed by a community of over 150 policy leaders, activists and practitioners from more than 60 countries in a consultation process that explored pioneering experiences from all over the world” of which UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition is proud to be a part. “The Protocol was developed across three iterations of global consultation undertaken by the School of International Futures (SOIF), culminating at the Future Generations Forum, taking place in Cardiff (Wales) from 29th April to 1st May 2024, where the final text was agreed.”

Joined by KT Nsah Mala, PhD, of the Cologne BRIDGES Hub, Founding Executive Director of BRIDGES, Steven Hartman, valued his involvement in the Future Generations Forum, representing UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition and contributing to this innovative Protocol for future generations. Reflecting on his experience of the Forum; and vocalising the importance and urgency of our collective work, and the challenges involved in taking action now, towards a sustainable and equitable future for our future generations, Dr. Hartman shares his thoughts:

“As we cast our eyes across channels of uncertainty and risk to imagine thriving futures for humanity and the wider web of life on Earth, we can never lose sight of just how much collective ingenuity and will and hard work it will take to build the bridges to those futures. The bridges to sustainable planetary futures begin at our feet, on the shores of present-day vulnerabilities. If we cannot define the who, and the how and the when of the real work – the brick and mortar of these bridges – our visions are apt to remain unfulfilled dreams. I don't think anyone in this incredible hall today (The Temple of Peace in Cardiff) is apt to underestimate the difficulties of the road ahead. It has taken tremendous perseverance and commitment from many people over many years to reach the milestone of today's Forum, intended to feed into the United Nations Summit of the Future and its outcomes in September this year.”
