The second Governing Council of UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES

The second Governing Council of UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES was convened online, on Thursday 6 February 2025.

BRIDGES Governing Council is the programme’s decision making body and is comprised of a distinguished group of experts and thought leaders from around the world.

The meeting was chaired by Gabriela Ramos, the Assistant Director General for the Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO and convened by Prof. Steven Hartman and Associate Prof. Luci Attala.

BRIDGES is a global coalition operationalised by a network of regional and thematic hubs. Key achievements of BRIDGES hubs over the past year were highlighted.

In addition, the Governing Council ratified a raft of priority processes compiled by the Directorate and the International Programme Office of UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES. These included the process for validation of humanities-led/community co-produced initiatives; a new application process for BRIDGES coalition membership; and a confirmed protocol for the establishment of new UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES thematic or regional hubs and programme offices.

There was great enthusiasm from the council members for the innovative transdisciplinary approach BRIDGES has developed, which places the humanities centre-stage as a key voice in the sustainability sciences, and the excellent results to date.

These are seen as being fundamental to helping make great strides towards addressing the complex poly-crises the world is currently facing and importantly in developing sustainable futures for future generations.

The next Governing Council meeting will be held in Wales in July 2025.
