Towards Peaceful Ecological Civilisations through Plural Pathways

We are delighted to share the Highlights of the Club of Rome’s Earth–Humanity Reconciliation International Conference

What does it actually look like to live in harmony with the Earth? This was the central question at the Earth–Humanity Reconciliation International Conference, held in Suzhou from 5–7 November 2025. This landmark event, the Club of Rome’s inaugural conference in China, brought together global experts to realign human progress with the health of our planet’s ecosystems. This event was hosted by the Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) and co-organised by the Club of Rome, the Earth-Humanity Coalition, the World academy of Art and Science, and UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition; focussing on "ecological civilization" and the urgent need to integrate scientific innovation with ethical, cultural, and traditional wisdom.

Key Highlights from the Summit:

  • A Decade of Action: The conference supported the UN’s International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, emphasising science as a tool for peace and transformation.
  • Cultural Wisdom: Speakers argued that technical fixes aren't enough. We need an ethical shift that blends modern science with traditional and local knowledge.
  • Ecological Civilization: Using Chinese worldviews as a lens, attendees discussed how to restructure finance and policy to support a "living planet" philosophy.

Beyond the strategic sessions, the conference was a moment of celebration. The Club of Rome strengthened its regional partnerships and paid tribute to the legendary Professor Jorgen Randers, whose work on The Limits to Growth and Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity continues to provide a roadmap for humanity’s future.
