This collection features contributions from leading experts alongside exciting new voices, presenting pioneering work on species extinction from diverse perspectives within the environmental humanities.

Biodiversity loss threatens the ecological foundations of all biological life on Earth, yet the solutions to this crisis remain a subject of fierce debate. This book addresses extinction—which, alongside climate change, stands as the most urgent environmental crisis of the twenty-first century—by examining species decline and conservation, with a specific focus on varying cultural contexts, temporal scales, and media.

Contributors investigate the ethical frameworks that define acceptable and unacceptable ways of engaging with plants and animals, the social, aesthetic, and affective perceptions and meanings attributed to specific species, and how human-nonhuman relations are structured within a given social order, including which species are deemed worth preserving and at what cost.

Drawing on the disciplines of anthropology, cultural geography, environmental history, philosophy, literary studies, media studies, and studies of religion, this book explores how the reality of biodiversity loss challenges foundational assumptions in these fields. In doing so, it opens up fresh avenues for thought and activism aimed at shaping the multispecies communities of the future.
