Sustaining the Sea: Stories and practices of Welsh fishers.

Luci Attala, Louise Steel, and Gareth Thomas, along with some of the societal partners collaborating on this transdisciplinary research initiative, will be discussing the Coastal TALES project on a panel at the Wales Real Food and Farming Conference on 20 November, from 13:45-15:00.

Coastal TALES, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as part of the Belmont Forum’s joint call for Climate and Cultural Heritage, is researching how traditional stories can help deliver innovative local solutions to the changing climate in coastal regions.

Collaborating with societal partners to understand how heritage stories can drive action in education, policy and nature-based innovation, Coastal TALES is examining climate adaptation in three coastal areas: Kodiak Island, Alaska, Dublin Bay in Ireland and southwest Wales. The UK Hub of UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition has been carrying out fieldwork in Wales, working with Câr y Môr, Teifi Coracles and Cardigan Bay Fish.

The theme of the conference this year is ‘More Food – More Farmers – More Nature – More Resilience.’ Guest Speakers include Derek Walker, the Future Generations Commissioner For Wales, who will be opening the conference. The vital connection of food in the context of wellbeing is a current focus for Derek and his team.

The conference includes the opportunity to partake in field visits to a range of local initiatives where delegates will have the chance to see what’s happening hands-on, on the ground, to improve the food system in the immediate vicinity.
