Forum: Diverse Research Methods on Changing Human-environment Relations

The humanities encapsulate a diverse range of methods for researching past and present human-environment relations. Each subject area - be it Literary studies, Art, Archaeology, History, Social Anthropology, or Linguistics - contributes valuable yet wildly different methodological tool kits, which we will explore through this cross-pollinator.

Organised with the aim of fostering discussion and collaboration among and with early career researchers in the environmental humanities, we are looking for PhD students and Post-docs to join us in setting up this roundtable about methods.

Methods are often overlooked or taken for granted in the humanities. This workshop provides an opportunity for researchers to reflect on what they do to produce knowledge, and to do that in conversation with peers trained in other traditions. This will give participants a better understanding of the role of the different, and often complementary methods that together make up the EH.

All methods, from literary analysis, to interviews, archival research, participant observation, and creative experimental methods are welcomed! In a roundtable format, each of the four to six panelists will present a very brief (5-10 min) presentation on the specificities of one method they use in their research.

This will be followed by a guided discussion among the panelists and then opened to include comments and discussion with the audience. The MESH Cross-pollinator Forum will take place in two sessions with a short break in the middle, and we will gather for refreshments afterwards.
